Artists, or bohemians, can change the distribution of highly skilled professionals across regions. Artists create a stimulating context for people, and evidence confirms that the way professionals chose their location depends also on non-economic factors.

Why is it important?
Of especial importance is the direct and indirect impact of bohemians on socio-economic development, through their ability to to improve life quality and tolerance and to attract other categories of creative professional, who are in general more directly involved in industrial production and economic growth.
Perspectives
The paper highlights economic implications of the presence of bohemians, but does not imply that arts should have a function per se. However, in economic policy terms, results show that humanities, scientific and technical education should not be seen as radically different and alternative patterns to economic growth, but as synergic fields that lead to different, but complementary societal and economic outcomes. Difference and positive interaction need to be conjugated.
