What is it about?

The study is concerned with understanding the performance of rocket motors that produce two distinct levels of thrust. The study is conducted both experimentally and theoretically.

Why is it important?

A dual thrust rocket motor produces two levels on thrust during its operation. It starts with a high (boost) level followed by a low (sustain) level. The importance of such motors stems from its use in small tactical rockets and UAVs. The motor provides the vehicle with high launch acceleration followed by a near-zero-acceleration flight. The use of dual-thrust rocket motor boosts the vehicle to the nominal flight speed very quickly and leaves more time for flight control. The study focuses on a special type of dual-thrust rocket motors that is characterized by a compact light-weight design and a stable operation as well as high boost-to-sustain thrust ratio.

Perspectives

To me, the study was more a challenging adventure than a typical study. It is interesting in many aspects. The theoretical analysis was not addressed before in the open literature. A novel test motor for the experiments was developed and optimized.
