Perspectives

This work, carried out by the lead author as part of his PhD, shows nicely why vehicles with bluff rear ends - like SUVs - require the use of scale-resolving methods if we are to capture the aerodynamic flow field and force coefficients. Of the approaches available the work highlights the potential economy of a Lattice Boltzmann based VLES. Finally, the work is also a useful reminder to look beyond matching integral force coefficients with experiment.
