What is it about?
In 2016, the World Health Assembly adopted Resolution 69.9, which extends the scope of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, and closes an important gap in international nutrition policy.

Why is it important?
The new resolution protects infants and young children from aggressive and inappropriate marketing of a variety of commercial nutrition products. The legislation protects exclusive breastfeeding for six months, continued breastfeeding beyond two years of age and supports optimal complementary feeding practices for infants and young children into the early preschool years.
Perspectives
With this key international legislation in place, more work is needed to advance the adoption of the International Code globally and strengthen monitoring systems locally.
