What is it about?

In this study, we do two things: 1) We describe and test a new method for population-level structural analysis; 2) We apply that method to the BDI-II to determine if any of the proposed test structures work better. We find that: 1) The new method for cross-sample structural analysis appears sound; 2) There are multiple structures for the BDI-II that fit equally well, so it is likely that choice of model should be based on the clinical usefulness of that model.

Why is it important?

The new method for cross-sample structural analysis is much simpler than previously proposed methods, and can even be accomplished in Excel. Also, the fact that multiple models seem to fit BDI-II equally well suggests that decisions about using this depression scale should be based on more practical factors.
