What is it about?

This study is about identifying how many people in Canada have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This is a common and important disorder, but its prevalence in Canada was not known prior to a national survey that was conducted in 2012.

Why is it important?

This kind of information helps with setting priorities - it indicates how many people have GAD, and also their characteristics. It helps to quantify the treatment needs that are associated with this disorder.

Perspectives

Generalized anxiety disorder follows a different pattern than phobias (where the anxiety is linked so a specific or social stimulus) or panic disorder (characterized by discrete panic attacks. It is often associated with other anxiety and mood disorders, but has its own treatment needs and is associated with its own contribution to the burden of mental ill-health in the population.
