What is it about?

In this article, we argue that to temporarily solve economic crises, destruction of capital (ie. workplaces, social benefits) seems to be necessary to make room for the 'healthy' sectors of the economy to grow. To solve the mounting climate crisis, we are simultaneously in desperate need to destroy the 'fossil' capital, which lives off destroying the life conditions. We argue that capital destruction ought to be directed, through political means, toward the fossil capital and thereby attack both the economic and the ecological crises.

Why is it important?

There are many articles on both economic crisis management and on transitions to a more sustainable economy, but practically all tend to ignore the need and power in capital destruction. This, in a a way, neo-schumpeterian argument makes this contribution unique.

Perspectives

Being both a social scientist and an environmentally concerned citizen and father, interested in both economics and ecology, writing a paper that mixes theory and politics from different disciplines was very rewarding, even fun.
