What is it about?

In this study several music teachers explored methods for teaching children expressive music performance. An expressive performance could be described as a musical way of playing a piece. We found that there were various methods that could be used to work on musical playing, for example asking questions about the music, using movements and gestures, playing for pupils and listening to own recordings. It seems that especially asking questions about the musical meaning and how to convey this was helpful for learning to play more musically.

Why is it important?

This study shows that various methods can be used to teach expressive performance and that children can learn to play more musically. This is important as it can be hard to know how to teach children to play expressively.

Perspectives

As a music teacher I find it fascinating to see how young musicians sometimes suddenly learn to play with more expression. This study helps to understand more about the methods teachers can use to help their pupils to become more expressive musicians.
