What is it about?

This paper examines the volatile relationship of a celebrity couple and the factors that influence Black girls' perceptions of their relationship violence. By identifying the people and sources of information shaping Black girls interpretations of Rihanna and Chris Brown's relationship, this research helps us understand what factors contribute to perceptions of dating violence in their own lives.

Why is it important?

Given the limited research examining the influence of media on racial / ethnic minority populations, this study provides important foundational information about how Black youth negotiate this mediums messages. Further, how Intimate partner violence can be framed cross culturally is discussed.

Perspectives

This is one of the few studies that empirically examines the influence of a celebrity dating violence episode, and uses a culturally appropriate perspective.
