What is it about?

Prominent music learning researcher Edwin Gordon (1927-2015) developed four music aptitude tests to gauge students' potential to achieve in music. This study analyzes 50 years of published research to determine the validity of Gordon's tests.

Why is it important?

My findings show that Gordon's tests predict performance achievement in music moderately well. Criterion measures less dependent on performance did not associate convincingly with the tests. Despite this, music education researchers and practitioners frequently use Gordon's tests in conjunction with assessment of non-performance-based musical outcomes-- a questionable practice.
