What is it about?

Much has been made of the role of media in the Arab Spring uprisings, but little is known about the role of media in repression and dissent. Here we introduce a game-theoretic model of media in repression and dissent. Then we use case studies to illustrate this model. We find that uncertainty about the ability of government to successfully repress makes protest more likely and that media tend engage in watchdog reporting in environments where media are actually less free.
