What is it about?

Social work scholars have shown increasing interests in social entrepreneurship and we do not know how social entrepreneurs tackle social work challenges in the HIV/AIDS sector. This article is the first to uncover this phenomena, using data from Ashoka (perhaps the world's most influential SE support organization), to identify major interventions employed by social entrepreneurs in the HIV/AIDS sector. It links the findings to major theories of organization and sociology and theorize a framework to better account for the interventions.

Why is it important?

This is one of the first articles that provides a linkage between social entrepreneurship and social work. From a social work lens, this article offers an extension of what is already known in the SW literature. Thus, it may serve as an important bridge to further studies at the intersection between SE and SW.

Perspectives

Social work scholars have an interest yet also skepticism on the promise of social entrepreneurship as an important paradigm in thinking about doing SW work. This article shows that the two fields can inform each other and SW can gain from SE research because the two share overlapping theoretical foundation including social value creation.
