What is it about?

We analysed a sample of returning Sciences without Borders undergraduates and found that they had qualitatively different visions of how they wanted their home universities to engage with local economies and societies than those that stayed in country, suggesting that outbound u-g programs are not just for young people to travel for a year, but can actually generate impacts when they return.

Why is it important?

At a time when funding for higher education is declining sharply, there is an increased need to show the potential impacts of higher education on society. This article suggests that when governments pay for students to travel abroad, they may bring back perspectives that stay with them for life, generating benefits years later.

Perspectives

Given that several coauthors have been the recipients of such funding in the past, having experiences that altered their perspectives fundamentally, it was important to us to show the value of these programmes on a societal level.
