What is it about?

How one deals with bereavement and grief is influenced by the norms of one’s cultural identity. Cultural assessment of bereavement and grief is therefore pivotal for a comprehensive evaluation of grief-related mental health. To facilitate clinical exploration of cultural aspects of bereavement and grief, we proposed a set of brief, person-centered, and open-ended questions that can be used in conjunction with the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview.

Why is it important?

Cultural assessment of grief is needed for a comprehensive evaluation of grief-related psychopathology and for negotiating appropriate treatment.

Perspectives

I hope clinicians will find these questions helpful when exploring cultural aspects of bereavement and grief among patients seeking mental health care following the loss of loved ones, enhancing their understanding as well as helping them tailor appropriate interventions.
