What is it about?
White blood cells leave the bloodstream to fight infections in a process known as leukocyte emigration. Historically leukocyte emigration has been linked conceptually to leakage of blood vessels, which causes a buildup of fluid outside of the circulation known as edema. It has only recently been realized that leukocyte emigration and the leakage of blood vessels (causing edema) can be regulated separately. This raises the possibility of developing drugs that reduce leakage and edema without impairing the immune response.
