Perspectives

The period from birth to the start of primary school is acknowledged as a crucial time for children. It potentially includes great opportunities despite risks associated to vulnerabilities. Meeting the proper care, nutrition, safety and protection needs of children in this age group in a timely manner is pivotal to ensure their well-being and best interests. Quality services provided in the early years potentially enhance children’s wellbeing in the long term. In the absence of such provision, inequalities could be exacerbated. To implement practices that take into account children’s welfare and well-being, standards for early childhood education and care (ECEC) services should be regularly monitored.
