The paper focuses on children's engagement with digital technologies during COVID-19. Children experienced opportunities to combine real, imaginary and virtual worlds, which supported learning about technologies and maintaining their friendship.

Why is it important?

Findings show that by integrating real, imaginary and virtual worlds children build a collective social situation that provides new and different opportunities for learning and social engagement. The digital space across different platforms and devices supported the children to experience a range of emotions including joyous moments, empathy and attunement as they encouraged each other to participate.

Perspectives

Writing this article with my colleague and longtime collaborator was a pleasure. The article contributes new ideas to the literature in relation to children's social engagement using digital devices and within virtual, real and imaginary worlds.
