What is it about?

What do you do with any unused or expired medicines at your home? The European Union requires that free of charge collection systems are established by the Member States. But it does not say, how these systems should be designed or operated. Most European citizens can go to a pharmacy and return their medicine leftovers there. But do they know about this possibility, and do they use it? Why is it that they should do it – to protect the environment or their own health? And why is it that in Spain you can leave the leftovers in a collection box, while in Denmark you must hand them over in a transparent plastic bag?_x000D_ We investigate the effectiveness of pharmaceutical collection systems in the EU and discuss whether the effectiveness can be improved by providing harmonised rules and guidelines by the EU.
