What is it about?

This article shows the robustness of the dialects of Gujarati (focussing on Surti, Kathiawadi, Charotari & Pattani). Though characterised as 'deviating" from the standard, they show highly structured and systematic differences from it, and small differences from each other. The article describes a "chain shift" among the consonants, chiefly k, c, s and h. These shifts have a surprisingly long and deep history.
