What is it about?

We asked parents of preschoolers with autism or Down syndrome to tell us about the types of literacy experiences they engage in with their children. We were particularly interested to find out if there were differences that could potentially be explained by the challenges in social communication often observed in preschoolers with autism.

Why is it important?

Children's early experiences with literacy in the home environment are important for future reading success. A better understanding of factors influencing these experiences may help direct early intervention for these groups of children who are considered at risk of later reading difficulties.

Perspectives

The results from this exploratory study showed lower levels of interest in shared book reading in preschoolers with autism compared to their peers with Down syndrome.
