What is it about?

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease which mostly occurs in the later life. In this disease, the bone becomes weak and there is the high probability of occuring fracture, on the basis of its value. There are many factors responsible for this. Different lifestyles factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, tea/coffee consumption affect the mineralization of bone. Similarly, calcium consumption and sun exposures are very important contributing factors for this.

Why is it important?

As the age increases, the probability of suffering from osteoporosis increases. In addition to this, the daily calcium intake also decreases with age. That's why the calcium supplementation is essential for the people aged 50 years and above.

Perspectives

The completion of this research had some challenges. The food composition table 2012 was used for the calculation of calcium value in food. This food composition table did not contain the list of many foods that Nepalese people mostly consume. Another thing was that there was no any software to calculate such value. Besides these, the DXA facility is available to few hospitals of Kathmandu and it is expensive. So there was the problem to find out the respondents.
