What is it about?

Polyps can be precursor to colorectal cancer and detecting them from imaging of the gastrointestinal tract is thus very important. In this work, we analyzed an automatic protrusion measure based on how these polyps protrude out via wireless capsule endoscopy videos.

Why is it important?

Finding and identifying polyps, which are abnormal growths in human gastrointestinal tract can help prevent colorectal cancer. This work shows that by using a protrusion measurement in capsule endoscopy videos we can reliably detect the image frames that may contain polyps.

Perspectives

This is one of the first studies applied to the novel capsule endoscopy videos from patients. Our work showed the promise of capsule endoscopy in reliably predicting the presence of polyps. This was a collaboration with gastroenterologists from Portugal and initial work proved that efficient computer-aided diagnosis in gastroenterology is possible.
