What is it about?

Patients with acute lung injury must be placed on mechanical ventilation. If set improperly this can have an unintended result of a secondary ventilation induced lung injury (VILI), which significantly increases mortality.

Why is it important?

The mortality of acute lung injury remains unacceptable high and VILI exacerbates this mortality. Our group is studying improved mechanical ventilation strategies to reduce the mortality associated with acute lung injury.

Perspectives

This article supports the basic pathophysiology of acute lung injury and VILI and have developed a novel Time Controlled Adaptive Ventilation (TCAV) protocol, which we believe and our data supports, will significantly reduce VILI and the mortality associated with acute lung injury.
