What is it about?
Online platforms have been cracking down on adult content, pushed by payment companies and anti-pornography groups. This has forced game developers who make adult games to change how they work. Adult games are a good example of how platform rules affect both what games look like and how they are sold and distributed. This paper looks at how developers of pornographic games responded when platforms introduced new content restrictions. By comparing different versions of the same games over time, the study identifies three ways developers adapted: (1) changing the game content itself to meet platform rules, (2) moving explicit content outside the platform through unofficial or semi-official add-on patches, and (3) using substitute words or coded language that players understand but that avoids triggering content filters. The findings suggest that developers and players have developed shared informal knowledge about how platform systems work, and use that knowledge to get around restrictions. Rather than simply following the rules, developers find ways to keep their content accessible. Platform censorship does not just block content: it changes how adult games are designed, how themes are presented, and how content is split across different platforms and distribution channels.

Why is it important?
Platform censorship does not make adult content disappear; it pushes it to less-regulated spaces. This study shows that developers routinely move explicit material outside mainstream platforms to avoid content rules, often to spaces with little or no age verification. If child protection is the goal, the evidence suggests that focusing on age verification at distribution and payment platforms would be more effective than content bans that simply relocate the problem.
Perspectives
The research builds on data from changelogs and changes in development practices and game content, providing an initial evidence-based look at the impact of the regulating pornographic content in games.
