What is it about?

GenAI has fundamentally changed the nature of programming. CS Education must change as well. Much of our traditional CS curriculum has been focused on how to learn the basic of programming. Now that programming is not the bottleneck, what are the new skills that have the most influence on programming and software engineering success?

Why is it important?

Over the past several decades, CS education has changed relatively little compared to the advances in software, hardware, and general tech advancement globally. GenAI is stressing that approach to the breaking point: enrollments are down, students believe that CS education is irrelevant, and people assume AI can replace programmers. That certainly is not the case, but we do have to use this crisis to revamp our emphasis and approach.

Perspectives

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to take a hard look at the entire CS curriculum and determine what is still relevant, what we are trying to do, and how to pivot. If CS educators act quickly and decisively to re-invent CS curricula, we have the chance to show other academic disciplines that there are ways to teach *with* AI instead. If we desperately cling to lesson plans from a decade ago, bootcamps and newly-empowered Software Engineering departments will control the field. We don't have the luxury of waiting and slowly evolving - it's time for a paradigm shift.
