What is it about?

This paper looks at the creation of an interactive feature for Twitch, a popular live streaming platform, which was introduced during a major Dota 2 tournament in 2021. We discuss the important design choices that helped make this feature a hit with viewers. We also examined how over 300,000 viewers used this feature and found some clear trends in how they interacted with it.

Why is it important?

Understanding how the design affected users is crucial because digital media is becoming more interactive. Knowing how users engage with these experiences can help tournament organizers and sponsors make better decisions, ensuring they continue to support these events. This support is essential to keep these entertaining tournaments running and successful, while creating better and more usable experiences for audiences.
