What is it about?

Sounds are often used in interactive systems, such as smartphones, computers, information kiosks, bank machines, and so on. This paper examines what is known about the qualities of sound (such as pitch, intensity, fidelity, and so on) and how they map to low and high aesthetic (pleasure) perceptions.

Why is it important?

Providing aesthetically pleasing stimuli in interactive systems is often linked to higher quality perceptions of usability and user experience. By defining and describing a framework that maps sound qualities to aesthetic perceptions, this work aims to provide sonic and interaction designers with a tool that can be used to maximise the user experience when integrating sounds into their products.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a collaborative and iterative process and we do not consider the framework to be definitive by any means. Through ongoing discussions and studies with researchers and practitioners, we hope that the framework will grow and evolve, becoming closer to a unified, or complete, model over time.
