What is it about?

Nowadays it is possible to create three-dimensional copies of crime scenes. During a trial, would it help the jury better understand what happened during a criminal event if they could visit the original scene in Virtual Reality? This paper examines if a virtual visit supports memory and decision-making in a simulated hit-run scenario.

Why is it important?

The current trial process does not support the natural way the jury makes sense of evidence. Modern technology, such as Virtual Reality, can create a realistic recreation of physically being present at the location being displayed in a head-mounted display. These virtual environments have the potential to support a deeper understanding of past events if presented in a narrative format that the jurors can follow.
