What is it about?
We have integrated optimization tools into a nation-scale standardization process for the new French keyboard. The 3-year process taught us that computational tools need to be designed from a participatory perspective. They are not just used to solve a well-defined problem but also to learn about it, to make refinements, to consider multiple perspectives, and to respect the different needs and roles of stakeholders.

Why is it important?
Algorithmic tools can make design processes more rigorous and less subjective. However, we identify important opportunities for research to develop tools that allow stakeholders at all levels to interactively participate in the optimization process.
