What is it about?

To perform accurate manipulation tasks, interface designers can create multi-degrees of freedom interfaces by tracking the user's body and gestures. However, it's important to determine how many degrees of freedom should be controlled simultaneously by the user to ensure accuracy.

Why is it important?

The study shows that there is a relationship between the number of degrees of freedom that a user can control at the same time and the number of degrees of freedom required for accurate touchless manipulation. Specifically, when the number of degrees of freedom being controlled simultaneously increases, it has the opposite effect on the ballistic and correction phases of interactive tasks.

Perspectives

It appears that when the user is able to control more degrees of freedom at the same time, they are able to complete the initial phase of the task more quickly. On the other hand, when it comes to making precise adjustments during the correction phase, separating the degrees of freedom is more effective. Ultimately, a hybrid approach that is customized for the specific task at hand seems to yield the best results.
