What is it about?

Many doctors are familiar with the main causes of pancreatitis. However, there are a number of rarer causes that clinicians should remain aware of. This is a report of a rare case of pancreatitis caused by a pancreatic herniation.

Why is it important?

This is an extremely rare case of pancreatitis caused by herniation of the body of the pancreas into the thoracic cavity. Whilst clinicians are all too familiar with the text-book causes of pancreatitis, they should remain aware of more uncommon causes before labelling cases as idiopathic.
