What is it about?
From artistic appreciation to data-driven science, the study of soundscapes has fundamentally evolved. This paper delivers a historical overview and bibliometric analysis of the three interconnected fields: acoustic ecology, soundscape ecology, and ecoacoustics.

Why is it important?
Our bibliometric mapping reveals the evolution of acoustic ecology, tracking its growth from human-centric roots into the broader domains of soundscape ecology and ecoacoustics. We show how the field has expanded to capture ecological processes across diverse scales, culminating in a recent, technology-driven shift toward advanced ecoacoustic monitoring - a powerful tool now vital for assessing biodiversity, land-use changes, and overall ecosystem health.
