What is it about?

This research describes a real time PCR (RT-PCR) assay for the concurrent identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonorrhoeae) and its antimicrobial susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. The assay utilizes novel primers to amplify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) containing signature sequences in the gyrA region of N. gonorrhoeae. The primers were over 99% sensitive and specific in identifying N. gonorrhoeae and its ciprofloxacin susceptibility status.

Why is it important?

This assay has the potential to be a rapid and an inexpensive test for the concurrent identification of N. gonorrhoeae and its ciprofloxacin resistance status.
