What is it about?
This paper focuses on the detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), AmpC beta-lactamases and carbapenemases in gram-negative pathogens.

Why is it important?
It is important to detect ESBLs, AmpCs and carbapenemases because they can cause treatment failures which cannot reliably be predicted from routine antibiotic susceptibility tests. Therefore special tests are required to detect these resistance mechanisms.
