What is it about?

Cytochrome P450s reside in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and require the formation of complexes with other proteins in order to carry out the conversion of substrates into the more water soluble products that are more readily excreted. This is a summary of how the membrane and membrane components influence the behavior of this enzyme system.

Why is it important?

This work points out that different P450 enzymes reside in different regions of the endoplasmic reticulum, with some P450s localizing into more structured membrane regions that are high in cholesterol and sphingomyelin, whereas other P450s prefer membrane regions that are more fluid.

Perspectives

These differences in membrane localization of the P450 proteins can have a significant effect on their ability to degrade foreign compounds, and potentially affect the ability of P450s to move to other organelles of the cell.
