What is it about?

Students who serve as group exercise instructors have a unique role of leading their peers through a series of choreographed exercise movements. This paper examines their experiences through the use of interviews.

Why is it important?

Participants reported that they improved leadership skills, public speaking, and conflict resolution as a result of teaching group exercise. Much of the skill acquisition that occurs in this setting goes unreported. Thus, it is important for campus recreation professionals to convey the skill development that occurs in group exercise instruction to students and institutional administration to provide further validation of programs.

Perspectives

Many of the skills and traits that I find valuable in my own personality were formed or shaped by leadership opportunities in sports and exercise. I found it interesting to learn that the participant responses echoed many of my same thoughts and feelings.
