What is it about?

Hong Kong has two mega development projects underway that include open-air concert venues. This paper reviews some noise incidents due to concerts at the Hong Kong Stadium and Cantonese operas at other public places and suggests ways to prevent similar incidents to take place in new venues.

Why is it important?

People should learn from the past mistake(s). With the advent of virtual reality technologies, public engagement shall be taken place in the planning stage and soundscape design shall be carried with with active participation from different stakeholders such as potential users of open-air concert venues, designers and management teams of the venues, and general public (in particular those people who live and work in the vicinity of the venues).

Open-air concert venues are important to musicians and audiences alike. They shall be loved by the majority of the public - only if they are designed and managed properly.
