We explored the impact of noise in bars and pubs on their customers and discussed good noise control practices for bars and pubs in a densely populated city such as Hong Kong.

Why is it important?
Our noise measurements in three bars and pubs showed that equivalent continuous noise levels Leq,10 mins in pubs and bars ranged from 66.5 to 79.9 dBA while the maximum noise levels i.e. Lmax in pubs and bars ranged from 78.5 to 96.5 dBA during the measurement periods. Hence, the noise exposure in pubs and bars during the happy hours may not induce hearing losses alone to their customers. However, the maximum noise levels in pubs and bars can cause environmental nuisances because at certain times their values reached 94 dBA or more in those pubs and bars in Central and Western District, and Wan Chai District, adversely influencing nearby residents in these two districts.
Perspectives
Noise from pubs and clubs is a major environmental nuisance in cities. It is one of the very few academic articles exploring noise in pubs and clubs in Hong Kong. It would be very interesting if similar studies are conducted in other cities in China.
