What is it about?

In nursing, male nurses are often considered less caring then female nurses because caring is attributed to the female gender. This stereotype could influence patients' experiences of and satisfaction with the care provided by male nurses. This small-scale research was conducted to explore whether patients are satisfied with the care of male nurses.

Why is it important?

Learning more about the caring behaviors of male nurses, the areas in which patients found them more caring, and the areas in which patients expect them to improve would help enhance the care provided by male nurses. This research had implications for improving the image of male nurses as care providers.

Perspectives

This research is very close to my heart. Being a male nurse, I am particularly interested in improving the image of male nurses as care provided and breaking the gender stereotypes in the nursing profession. After this study, we completed another large scale study on the very topic to further inform nursing community about male nurses caring behaviors.
