What is it about?

This MicroReview summarizes work to analyze a biological response to a toxic reactive oxygen species, singlet oxygen. This reactive oxygen species is a byproduct of light energy capture by photosynthetic cells, and used by plants, humans and animals to ward off unwanted microbial pathogens. This a response that is conserved across single cell and multi-ceulluar organisms, so analysis of this system has large importance in agriculture, medicine, the environment and biotechnolgy.
