What is it about?

Many nurses experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD. This was the first review paper to focus on interventions to prevent or reduce PTSD among hospital nurses. We found 6 studies that evaluated a variety of interventions. Some positive effects were found, offering a preliminary evidence base. Larger studies are needed, and interventions that focus on organizations, not just individuals.

Why is it important?

Nurse managers and hospital leaders want to provide evidence-based programs to promote nurses' wellbeing. This review shows that the evidence is still very limited, but it is growing.

Perspectives

This is another new study in the Trauma among Psychiatric Workers project, which has shown the effects of workplace violence and the need for psychotherapy for staff with PTSD symptoms. Please remember that most people with mental disorders are not violent and they live productive lives in the community. Those who need a stay in a psychiatric unit can have some challenging behaviors, including violence, that can affect the mental health of the nurses who care for them.
