What is it about?
Essential oils derived from plants have verified antimicrobial effects. Satureja edmondi, belongs to the Lamiaceae family and often is grown in Mediterranean regions. Of its 15 species, nine species are exclusively found in Iran, and they usually grow on limestone cliffs or rocky slopes . S.edmondi, is one of the local plants in Kermanshah which is used in traditional medicine; however its antimicrobial effects have not been evaluated.

Why is it important?
Chemical and synthetic ingredients are used to increase shelf life and inhibit the growth and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in food products.These ingredients can cause problems for the health of consumers. For replace such ingredients with natural preservatives and antimicrobials, several studies have been conducted to assess the antimicrobial properties of different plants.The results of this study confirmed the antimicrobial effect of the essential oil of S. edmondi in the food model.
Perspectives
In my opinion, researchers should be try to keep health of food and reduce the risk of microbial contamination in the food industry. The results of this study are also aimed for achieving this aim.
