What is it about?

An electronic search of a number of databases was undertaken to explore the use and application of case study research (CSR) in midwifery. The purpose was to analyze the application, strengths and limitations of midwifery case study methods. All publications written by midwives on midwifery specific topics where a CSR approach was used were retrieved. A quality appraisal process was used to analyze the inclusions and assess the degree of methodological rigor. Many papers included the necessary criteria to achieve rigor. The inclusion of all measures was not even across the papers however. Technical aspects were lacking namely reflexivity and transparency of process.

Why is it important?

A gap in the literature was noted with decreased use of CSR in midwifery contexts. The review raises the profile of CSR in midwifery. Optimal inclusions for CSR reports provides support for researchers interested in this approach. Increasing the profile and demonstrating CSR's applicability to a wide range of research questions may encourage its support and wider adoption.
