Why is it important?

We have identified the mechanism by which brain L1CAM is different from the form of the protein expresed by non-neural cells. This discovery opens new chances to the work of neuron specialization, impiortant also in medical neuriology.

Perspectives

REST is the gene critical for the specificity of neurons and neural cells. Interestingly, it is highly important for various brain diseeases. Deetails and developments can be found in the review I have produced together with Pietro Baldelli (P.Baldelli and J. Meldolesi, The transcription repressor REST in adult neurons: physiology, pathology and Diseases. eNEURO 2(4 )e0010-15.20015, pg 1-15).
