Why is it important?

Mental health difficulties (MHD) among students with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are a prevailing concern, but our understanding has been limited by problems with the research base. This study addresses these issues by using multiple comparison groups, case-control matching, comprehensive outcome modelling (including use of clinical significance thresholds), and incorporation of explanatory qualitative data to build a unique model of influences, experiences, and responses to MHD. The findings – which highlight extremely high rates of clinically significant problems among students with ASC, underpinned by social exclusion in school – are highly significant in light of the ongoing inclusion debate.
