What is it about?
This paper builds on Jespersen's (1924) treatment of adverbials with a greater scope than merely the verb. It develops distinctions between different kinds of adverbials according to different scopes of reference within the clause, and covers (under the heading 'clause comment adjuncts') phenomena later independantly called 'disjuncts' by Greenbaum (1969), including what Halliday (1984) refers to as 'modal adjuncts'.
