What is it about?

Shelf life is defined as the length of time for which an item remains usable and fit/safe for consumption. As fish is an highly perishable food item, we investigated shelf life of 5 marine water fishes widely available in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) part of the Indian Ocean.

Why is it important?

Considerable information on keeping qualities of iced and frozen stored fishes are available on the fish of cold and temperate waters, particularly on the species of Cod and Herring families. However, very little is known on quality changes occurring in the fish of tropical waters during ice and frozen storage.

Perspectives

In this research, we identified the acceptable storage duration of five marine fish species of BoB. By identifying the changes that occur, stakeholders in the fisheries sector can make informed decisions to enhance the quality and safety of their products. This study is a significant step towards improving the post-harvest handling of marine fish in tropical regions like Bangladesh.
