What is it about?

A research course was created at Springfield College, Springfield MA to assist pre-physical students in learning library/information literacy research, scientific writing and presentation skills. The skills addressed prepared the students to seek scientific information in the literature, write coherently and present formally on topics pertaining to the allied health sciences. The course was developed and team taught by key members of the Library Science and Physical Therapy departments.

Why is it important?

It was found that students were unprepared at both the upper undergraduate and early graduate levels to research, write and articulate scientific information and in some cases simple treatment related information. Success within these skills is important to success in future physical therapy practice.

Perspectives

Writing this article showed the importance of accomplishing these skills and the translation to work life. A bonus was the collaboration of the Library Science and Physical Therapy departments that should be an ongoing process as part of the educational experience for the allied health science student.
