What is it about?

The learning objectives for undergraduate dermatology courses in Germany were heterogenous. In order to define generally accepted learning objectives for dermatology/venereology a working group proposed a catalogue of learning objectives. This was derived from exisiting catalogues and took into account the relative importance (severity, frequency) of diseases and procedures. In a 1st delphi process the catalogue was condensed and disseminated to all university departments of dermatology in Germany. The answers were integrated, the catalogue revised (2nd Delphi round) and disseminated again. After integration of comments and discussion in the group (3rd Delphi round) this final revision was presented at the national yearly meeting of the German Dermatologic Society for an open discussion. The paper describes the process and presents the final catalogue of 111 learning objectives. They are differentiated into 3 levels (having heard, having seen, having handeled/performed).

Why is it important?

The scientific society (German Dermatological Society) presents an generally accepted catalogue of learning objectives for the dermatology undergraduate education. This helps to standardize the education in the field of dermatology. It adds to the introduction of the German competency based catalogue of learning objectives.

Perspectives

It was a pleasure to lead the working group. The results made all of us proud as up to now there are not many societies which were able to agree upon the learning objectives on a national level.
