Why is it important?

For Computer Graphics students (undergraduate and introductory graduate and intermediate-advanced) it provides a detailed overview of BRDF models from most basics to the most advanced models. It is also delivers an overview of ascuisition set ups from low cost to high end and describing their advantages and limitations. It is a valuable information for practitioners in VFX, Gaming, and computer graphics researchers, anyone with an interest in acquisition and use of real material models

Perspectives

For PhD students this work is important as a road map to understand how BRDF models and acquisition set ups have evolved such that they can focus their research with a deeper understanding of models/acquisition set ups advantages and limitations. It is also important for the artists community, providing them with clear descriptions of what is "under the hood" of material models and acquisition set ups.
